On Election Day

On Nov. 3 you vote at your assigned precinct, not at an early voting site. Find it with the voter lookup. Under Tennessee law, polls in Eastern time counties such as Hamilton close at 8 p.m.; the election commission sets the opening time.

What you need to bring

A photo ID issued by the State of Tennessee or the federal government: a Tennessee driver’s license, a state photo ID, a U.S. passport, a military ID or a Tennessee handgun carry permit with a photo, among others on the state’s accepted ID list. College student IDs and IDs from other states are not accepted.

Registering and updating your address

The registration deadline is 30 days before each election. For the Nov. 3 election it was Oct. 5. Register or change your name or address for future elections online at GoVoteTN. First-time voters who registered by mail or online must vote in person in their first election.

Absentee by mail

Tennessee allows absentee voting by mail only for voters who qualify, including:

  • voters 60 or older;
  • full-time college students, or their spouses, studying outside Hamilton County;
  • residents of a nursing home or assisted living facility outside the county;
  • commercial drivers (CDL or TWIC) working outside the county during voting hours;

and others listed by the commission. Request a ballot with the online request form by Saturday, Oct. 24. The ballot must be returned by mail and received by the close of polls on Election Day; hand delivery to the office is not allowed.

What is on the ballot

The Nov. 3 ballot carries state and federal races and three proposed amendments to the Tennessee Constitution, listed right after the race for governor. Each is a yes-or-no question. Read the full text on the Secretary of State’s 2026 amendments page, and check the Election Commission for a sample ballot for your precinct. Results will be posted by the commission on election night and are unofficial until certified.

What this means for you
