Hixson High School is the Hamilton County Schools high school on Middle Valley Road. Its mailing address says Hixson, but Census Bureau maps place the campus inside Chattanooga city limits. The school’s history page traces Hixson’s schools back to one-room schoolhouses of the 1800s. Its teams are the Wildcats.

Enrollment

The federal NCES directory counted 887 students in the 2023-24 school year, with 57 full-time-equivalent teachers, about 16 students per teacher. The Tennessee Department of Education’s 2024-25 school profile file has a newer count of 920 students.

Tennessee grades every public school A to F. The department says School Letter Grades give “a snapshot of how each school in the state is performing, including student achievement and academic growth measures for all schools, as well as a measure of college and career readiness just for high schools.”

The state’s spring 2026 test file has the share of Hixson High students who met or exceeded expectations on each test. On the high school end-of-course exams, Biology 49.8%, English II 49.8%, Geometry 38.2%, English I 28.8%, Algebra I 25%, Algebra II 21.8% and U.S. History 18.5%. Families zoned elsewhere can apply for an open enrollment seat: the district’s School Choice page lists Hixson High among its open enrollment schools and says the list can vary from year to year. The district says the School Choice application period runs each year from Nov. 16 through Jan. 29, with a lottery when there are more applicants than seats.

Sports and activities

For 2026-27, the TSSAA football classification list puts the team in Division I, Class 4A, Region 3, with East Ridge, Loudon, Red Bank, Sequoyah (Madisonville) and Signal Mountain. Basketball is in Class 3A, Region 3, District 6, with Brainerd, Central, East Ridge, Red Bank, Signal Mountain and Soddy Daisy.
