East Brainerd is the southeast corner of Chattanooga, east of I-75, along East Brainerd Road and Gunbarrel Road down to the Georgia line. It is home to Hamilton Place mall. The part inside the city covers about 11 square miles, where about 22,800 people lived in the 2020 census.

Where it is

Plan Chattanooga, which the City Council adopted on Sept. 22, 2026, treats East Brainerd as Area 11 and says its boundaries are “generally defined by Interstate 75 and South Chickamauga Creek to the west, Standifer Gap Road and the Chattanooga city limits to the north and east, and the Tennessee-Georgia state line to the south.” This guide uses the Regional Planning Agency’s map of Area 11, which lies entirely inside the city limits.

The plan says East Brainerd “has seen more recent changes than most parts of Hamilton County,” growing from horse farms and fields into “the region’s primary retail destination” after Hamilton Place mall opened in the late 1980s. East Brainerd Road, Gunbarrel Road, Shallowford Road and Jenkins Road are the main roads. All of the area is in ZIP code 37421. In the plan’s survey, residents raised concern that the area “is underserved by parks and greenways.”
