A man was shot and taken to a hospital after he and a Chattanooga police officer fired weapons on Kings Point Road Friday morning, the TBI said. No officers were hurt.

The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating a shooting involving a Chattanooga police officer Friday morning on Kings Point Road, near Chickamauga Dam. A man was shot and taken to a hospital. No officers were hurt.

The TBI said it was called in by 11th Judicial District Attorney General Coty Wamp. Its release of Oct. 23 is the only official account published so far.

What the TBI said happened

The bureau said its information is preliminary. According to the release:

  • At about 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 23, Chattanooga Police Department officers went to the 2000 block of Kings Point Road.
  • They had received a report of a man threatening to harm himself.
  • Officers made contact with the man. “For reasons still under investigation, the man and one officer fired their weapons,” the TBI said.
  • The man was shot and taken to a local hospital for treatment.
  • No officers were injured.

The TBI did not name the man or the officer and did not give his condition. It said it does not identify officers in these cases and refers those questions to the department. The Chattanooga Police Department had not posted a statement on the city’s news page when we checked Monday.

What happens next

TBI agents are working to independently determine what led to the shooting, the bureau said, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews. Their findings go to the district attorney general.

“The TBI acts solely as fact-finders in its cases and does not determine whether the actions of an officer were justified in these types of matters,” the bureau said. That decision rests with Wamp’s office, which serves Hamilton County.

The TBI said it will post any updates at TBINewsroom.com.
